New kitten question?

We recently adopted a 4 month old kitten. He's very energetic and likes to chase toys, but only rarely wants to be petted. He won't really sit in our laps for very long, and sometimes seems aloof. I've read that kittens tend to take a little while to get settled in before they feel comfortable enough to do all that. Is that true?
